I often think of the path I took to get to where I am now. I grew up on a small island off the east coast of Puerto Rico, where I went to the beach, snorkeled and dreamed about growing up to be a tourist. Moving to Texas shifted my lifestyle. I played tons of baseball, made new friends, picked up a southern draw and learned how to be a “country boy”. But yet, my affinity for being around water remained, as I found my way to the rivers, lakes and ponds in the hot Texas sun. I landed at Mines through the Harvey Scholarship and the opportunity to play baseball. I didn’t even know the school had a reputation or engineering. I convinced myself that environmental engineering sounded close enough to environmental science, and four and a half years later I now have a BS in environmental engineering. The scholarship has provided me the opportunities to meet wonderful people, travel to Kenya, New Zealand, Nepal, and Guatemala, and be immersed in a very collaborative, aspiring community. Now, even though I am not passionate about Colorado winters or snow, I have again found my way to water. I am currently studying Hydrology in graduate school at Mines. Future plans are still in the making, but I am in a good place and surrounded by good people, and I can’t help but smile at the past that has gotten me to this present.
