I wanted to attend Mines ever since coming to the campus in middle school for various state-level academic competitions. The Harvey scholarship both helped to make this financially easier and enhanced my experience on campus, offering an excellent support network within the community. I graduated with my B.S. in chemical engineering in December of 2017, and immediately began my studies working toward an M.S. in metallurgical and materials engineering the following semester, with the intent to diversify my background and while continuing to enjoy my experience at this amazing institution. In both of my degree programs, my studies have been interesting, challenging, and have taught me a valuable work ethic that will be a strong asset in my future career. During my time as an undergraduate student within the Harvey Scholars program, I had the privilege to serve in two leadership positions: applications director in 2015-2016 and co-secretary in 2016-2017. Both of these were eye-opening and rewarding experiences. Helping to coordinate applications was a responsibility that I did not take lightly, as no one should. Nevertheless, this experience taught me a lot about how to manage and implement a complex process. It also provided me with an opportunity to “pay it forward” within the scholarship by dedicating effort to this position. Lastly, while at Mines, I have had the opportunity to run cross country and track for one of the best programs in Division II of the NCAA. I’ve learned a lot about training at the collegiate level, thanks to amazing coaches, and I have the opportunity to continue to pursue my athletic endeavors for one more year while I continue to work on my master’s degree.
