“Pay it forward.” It’s easy in practice, but not necessarily in application.
I graduated in 2013 with a BS in statistics, and stuck around for a one-year Engineering & Technology Management master’s thanks to the opportunity for funding through the Harvey Scholars program. Every opportunity I had in college was thanks to the Harveys – traveling to Rome with the choir, for example. I held several leadership positions in student clubs, and was in Greek life. I could not have done any of that without their support. But how to pay it forward?
In 2018, I took a job at a local nonprofit. Since then I have worked in the nonprofit world, obtaining a certificate from Rice University in nonprofit leadership and joining the alumni relations team at the Jones Graduate School of Business. I didn’t realize I could spent 40 hours per week actually changing people’s lives.
Beyond that, my husband (also a Mines alumnus) and I are members of the President’s Council and give on an annual basis to several departments on campus, including the Every Oredigger initiative. We are big believers in creating change. and we hope that our dollars can help change another student’s life, even if it’s just a little bit. The Harveys taught me that.
