The summer before third grade, my family moved from Ho Chi Minh to the United States in search of better opportunities. Since that summer, my world has changed drastically and even more so after I started at Mines in the fall of 2014. The Harvey Scholars community encouraged me to explore passions outside of my civil engineering major, such as the visual arts and humanitarian engineering during my time on and off campus. The Harvey scholarship enabled me to volunteer in Ecuador, intern at a high-end residential architectural firm in South Hampton, work on risk mitigation projects in Guatemala and opened the doors to so many other wonderful opportunities. I am working towards a McBride and the humanitarian engineering minors, involved with Mines Without Borders, Mines Philanthropy Council, and ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers). Of all these great opportunities, my most treasured experience was rediscovering my roots during an unforgettable study abroad semester in Vietnam. Much of my personal growth happened as a result of these experiences. I cannot be thankful enough for the international and humanitarian focus of the Harvey Program, which allowed me to pave my unique path at Mines.
